Abstract

The Computer Games market is a large and growing one both in the UK and globally, with a series of recent emerging technological developments and new directions. We review some of those developmental directions from computer science, programming and technology driven perspectives and outline some key new opportunity areas and trends. We focus particularly on aspects concerning: new platforms; programming languages; graphics capabilities and software architecture developments. We identify particular potential in games and gamification that makes use of augmented reality(AR), virtual reality (VR), and immersive technologies. We provide some background behind our observed technological trends and discuss how new approaches to game development and the market might be exploited to leverage these trends.

Keywords: :games; gamification; augmented reality; virtual reality; game software; programming languages.
